Process

There are federal regulations governing the IRB process from start to finish. Applications are submitted to the IRB office and checked for completeness, typographical errors and signatures by the IRB staff. The applications are submitted using the official forms, which are available online. The forms contain a description of the research design, informed consent, subject recruitment and selection and measures for ensuring safety. The investigator also submits an informed consent document and the advertisements that will be used to recruit subjects.

There are 3 different categories of IRB reviews:

  • Full review
  • Expedited review
  • Exempt review

These review categories are discussed in more detail in the Types of Review module of this program.
