Human Subjects

Human subjects are defined in the Code of Federal Regulations as:

Living individual(s) from whom an investigator conducting research obtains:

  • Data through intervention or interaction with the individual, or
  • Identifiable private information

The IRB reviews research involving human subjects. Other types of research such as laboratory investigations or animal studies do not go before the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board, and may be subject to other types of review within Henry Ford Health System.
