Exempt Research

As a result of an expedited review, it may be found that a project is exempt from federal regulations. Research activities in which the only involvement of human subjects will be in one or more of the following categories may be exempt. There are detailed criteria that are followed by the IRB to determine whether a proposal is exempt from review.

  • Research conducted in an educational setting, involving normal educational practices
  • Research involving the use of educational tests, survey procedure or observation of public behavior, subject to certain protections that are required for those who participate
  • Research involving the collection or study of existing data, documents, records, pathological specimens, subject to certain protections that are required for those who participate
  • Research and demonstration projects conducted by department or agency heads which are designed to study, evaluate or examine public benefit or service programs
  • Taste and food quality evaluation and consumer acceptance studies

Note that your study must be reviewed and approved by the IRB if you are planning to publish your findings.

IRB staff must be involved in the decision to designate research as exempt from review. Contact the IRB Office for more information.
