Continuing Review

For continuing review after approval, the IRB must still ensure:

  • Risks are minimized
  • Risks are reasonable in relation to benefits
  • Subject selection is equitable
  • Informed consent is adequate
  • Privacy of subjects is protected

If you are planning to extend your research beyond the stated dates, a continuation review by the IRB is required before the expiration date.

The continuation of research after expiration of IRB approval is a violation of Federal Regulations. Research activities should stop and no new subjects are to be enrolled until re-approval has been obtained from the IRB. Data accumulated after IRB approval expires must be discarded.
